A major source for my artwork are my notebooks. I have been carrying around small notebooks and drawing in them for over 20 years. While my notebooks contain a lot of silly doodles and to-do lists, I also find in them certain images with a kind of energy that hints at meaning. I collect these more energetic drawings as digital scans.
My current body of work (2024-25) is a series of grids of collaged images derived from notebook drawings. These works on paper possibly suggest things uncovered in an archaeological find: artifacts from a vanished culture, characters from an alphabet as yet undeciphered.
An additional component is chance. The notebook drawings were made in pen or pencil on various kinds of paper. They were drawn over many years and in different circumstances, in response to varied situations. Once I put them together they begin to speak in ways I had not imagined.
My materials: Heavyweight Mitsumata paper, lightweight Kozo Washi, ink, watercolor pencils, Nori paste.
