Call to Artists

Want to exhibit at Gallery Route One?

Gallery Route One is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, not a commercial gallery. It is operated by a Board of Directors, a small, part time staff and its Artist Members.

Here are GRO’s exhibition opportunities:

  • Become an artist member. Artist members have solo or two person exhibitions every 24 – 36 months. Members support the gallery through paying dues and doing the volunteer work required to operate the art gallery. Applications are reviewed quarterly. Apply through GRO’s website. You will find more information and the application form online in Become a GRO Member Artist below.
  • Apply for a Fellowship. Artists between 21 and 40 years old may apply for a year-long fellowship with a small stipend. Fellows have solo shows and do some volunteer work during their Fellowship year. Sign up for our newsletter to learn when the next application period opens.
  • Exhibit in our Visiting Artist Program. GRO’s Visiting Artist Program seeks artists who address one of three themes: Environment (climate change and related issues); Social Justice (many themes), and Immigration (borders, diaspora, etc) as experienced by first, second or third generation artists. Find more information and the online application form in Visiting Artist Exhibition below.
  • Annual Juried Show. Now open to artists throughout California. The call for entries is in September or October. Sign up for our newsletter to learn when to apply.

Sign up for our newsletter to receive notices of upcoming call deadlines. These are also posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Visiting Artist Exhibition Proposal 2025

Visiting Artist Program Exhibition Proposal 2025 ended on June 30, 2024.

The Visiting Artist program hosts individual and small group shows 5 or 6 times per year for artists who are not Artist Members of GRO. The Visiting Artist Program is an important way that GRO shares its exhibition space with artists not affiliated with the organization.

The Project Space is the gallery within GRO primarily dedicated to shows by Visiting Artists. See the gallery floorplan.

Visiting Artist exhibitions occupy a major place in the gallery’s yearly exhibition schedule and run concurrently with GRO artist member exhibitions in the Center and Annex Galleries.

Who may apply: We are seeking artists whose work is engaged with these issues of public concern:

  • The environmental crisis: humanity’s effect on the planet
  • Human rights (social justice), including anti-racism, and immigration

GRO embraces diversity, equity access and inclusion. Artists from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Artists are also invited to apply to curate a small group exhibition addressing one or more of these topics.

Become a GRO Member Artist

Gallery Route One artist membership is open to all professional artists living in the greater San Francisco Bay area. Artists from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply because GRO embraces diversity, equity access and inclusion.

We review artwork in all media including video and installation, but not production crafts.

Applications are reviewed quarterly by a panel of GRO artist members. Deadlines for each quarter are: March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31.

NOTE: we are pausing new membership application reviews until December 31, 2024. Applications will reopen in 2025.

Artists in the Schools Application for Teaching Artists

Gallery Route One invites artists to apply and participate in the Artists in the Schools Program for the upcoming academic year.
