I’ve spent a lifetime thinking about relationships—as a therapist for over 40 years, and as an artist for over 50. Therapy uses words; my paintings speak without language, making visible what resists articulation. As wordless emotional expressions, open to projection and interpretation, abstract paintings are inherently about relationships.
As I paint, I focus on the formal elements in a composition, their relationship to each other, and the drama that can be felt with an unexpected detail; I feel the tension of deciding what to reveal and what to cover or hide knowing that decision will affect the relationship between painter and viewer; I join two panels together creating a diptych or make a painting with distinct but related parts where their relationship is necessary to see and understand the whole. Meaning is increased and richness emerges through connection. My attraction to the color black reflects my love of depth and mystery, the promise of more yet to be discovered, and my increasing comfort with the unknown and the unforeseen.
