In 1999, Gallery Route One gave wooden boxes to local artists to create anything they wished. Twenty-four years later, THE BOX SHOW™ is more popular than ever, annually drawing thousands of people to this major gallery event in the rural West Marin town of Point Reyes Station.
THE BOX SHOW™ is not only a remarkable opportunity for artists to flex their creativity in their chosen medium, but also Gallery Route One’s largest fundraiser of the year, supporting community outreach programs such as the Latino Photography Project, Artists in the Schools program, public education programs, and exhibitions in the Project Space addressing environmental, immigration and social justice issues.
For THE BOX SHOW™, Gallery Route One distributes 150 identically sized wooden boxes to 150 artists and aspiring community members, all eager to interpret their art within this unique three-dimensional form. Two months later, an incredibly diverse exhibit of artwork occupies the gallery for five weeks.
Buyers will be required to register in person or by phone (415.663.1347), allowing them to enter bids in writing on the sheets located next to each piece; bids may also be called in by phone. Bidding will continue through the duration of the exhibit. All bidding will be done through this in-house system at the gallery, but even those who can’t visit the exhibit to see the boxes in person will nonetheless have a great opportunity to view them online.
In addition to an in-person opening, a pre-recorded Virtual Tour of the exhibit will be viewable on the gallery website soon after opening day. Over the course of the show, bidders are welcome to visit again, engaging the opportunity to monitor competing bids as they accumulate for each piece.
Over the course of the exhibit the gallery will also post information about different aspects of the work, such as additional artist-provided details about the creative process for specific boxes. Gallery Route One will do its best to keep everyone informed and updated through ongoing email blasts, social media and the GRO website, www.galleryrouteone.org.
There is something for everyone to enjoy at THE BOX SHOW™, a San Francisco Bay Area tradition. Come and experience the inventive and ingenious ways that art can be created when starting with a plain wooden box!
