Wong, Maree – Suri, Sister, Sister
Title: Suri Sister, Sister
Medium: Mixed Media Collage
The people of the nomadic Suri tribe areagro-pastoralists living in isolated locations cut off from the rest of the world on the border of southwestern Ethiopia and South Sudan.
These fascinating people live untouched by tourists; and with no Western influences, the Suri tribe manages to create their own “Code of Beauty and Fashion.”
Using only a few elements from Mother Nature such as crushed rocks for pigments, they paint their bodies and faces; and they use flowers, fruits and branches for hair decorations.
Their distinctive body art is used to connect people of the Suri tribe to their natural surroundings and to their environment. It is believed, in the tribe, if you are connected to your land you will live a long and prosperous life.
