Kopp, Jaine – Baskets to Art

Story of the Box

 One of my favorite annual exhibits at the de Young Museum in San Francisco is the Bouquets to Art. For one week, the galleries bloom with the work of floral artists, who interpret works in the de Young’s collections with stunning floral designs. This was my inspiration for my box design for 2021.

Being a kelp artist not a floral artist, I created a series of kelp baskets to respond to a Native American batik art piece. This and other batiks were created in the 1980’s by Ahmi and Madeline Goldfarb and signed simply as Goldfarb. This batik was my inspiration to tie the beauty of the Southwest with the beauty from the Pacific ocean.
