TRUTH, Artist books and broadsides Juried Exhibition

The concept of “truth” has been associated with books and the printed word for a long time, as in “going by the book” and other catch-phrases. Unfortunately the very notion of “truth” in the U.S.A. became politicized during the previous presidency and continues to take a beating in politics, the media and even in daily interactions between friends. Gallery Route One asks artists to consider what form truth takes and how they could EMBODY TRUTH in their work, within the artist book or broadside format. What does the word mean now: personally, politically or philosophically? How does an artist embody truth in their work?

Gallery Route One invites artists to submit expressions about truth in the form of handmade, handbound artist books both unique and in small editions, altered books, folded or sculptural books and very limited edition broadsides. Commercially printed and bound books or broadsides will not be accepted.

Visiting Artist Exhibition Proposal 2022-23

The Visiting Artist Program occupies a major place in the gallery’s yearly schedule. Exhibitions in the program run concurrently with GRO artist member exhibitions. The program is an important way that GRO shares exhibition space with artists not affiliated with the organization.

Who may apply: We are seeking artists whose work is engaged with these current issues of public concern: the environmental crisis, social justice, including anti-racism, and immigration. GRO embraces diversity, equity access and inclusion. Artists from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

The program hosts individual and small group shows 5 or 6 times per year. You are also invited to apply as a curator for a group exhibition on one of these topics.

The program does not currently offer financial support for Visiting Artist exhibitions. Exhibiting artists must transport or ship work to and from the gallery at their own expense. The gallery does not require a fee for use of the space and does provide printed publicity and a social media and newsletter campaign. There is a small honorarium for curators.

Call for Proposals: We are reviewing applications for exhibitions starting Dec. 31, 2022 through Dec. 2023. Apply now for exhibitions through May. Final deadline is February 1, 2023 at midnight.

We review artwork in all media including video and installation, but not crafts.

Applications are reviewed quarterly by a panel of GRO artist members.

Deadlines for each quarter are: March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31.

There is a $25 portfolio review fee.

After an initial screening of the online application, artists will be asked to bring in three pieces of current artwork for jury review. The final stage in the application process is a personal interview.

Applications are judged on:

  • Quality of the artwork
  • Dedication to artistic practice
  • Professional presentation of your artwork
  • Applicant’s willingness to work in a collaborative way within the organization.
  • Applicant’s willingness and ability to support gallery programming by paying dues and performing tasks necessary for running a professional art gallery including gallery staffing and committee participation.

Newly admitted artists commit to an 18 month initial membership, which includes paying dues for the entire 18 months, performing gallery tasks, gallery staffing, and attending member meetings.

All members are required to sign a Membership Contract.

Dual Membership: Artists may request to join as a Dual Member, essentially sharing the benefits, cost and responsibilities of a single membership with another artist. The application is the same for full or dual membership. You may apply singly if there is a dual membership open, or two artists may apply together.

All applications are online (link below). To prepare your online application in advance you will need:

  • Current resume in .pdf or .docx format
  • A brief statement about your artwork/process
  • A brief statement about why you wish to join Gallery Route One as an Artist Member
