Congratulations to the 8th grade graduating class of West Marin School

In 2020, as in previous years, Eighth Grade students at West Marin School made portraits of themselves in Frida Kahlo style, through Gallery Route One’s Artists in the Schools Program (AIS). The self-portraits have always been displayed at their graduation celebration. This year, with graduation festivities cancelled, the self-reflective portraits are being exhibited in the divided windows at GRO as well as here.

For the self-reflective portrait project, students view the artwork of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, famous for her distinctive self-portraits, write a poem about themselves with the assistance of West Marin teacher Julie Cassel, and create a self-portrait with AIS art teacher Vickisa. During several lessons each student creates the artwork for their self-reflective portrait, using a mirror, and then frames it in Mexican folk-art style, a tin frame that each student makes and decorates.

Note: Interrupted by Covid 19 sheltering at home, some of the frames have not been embellished and will be finished upon the return of portraits to students.
