Mirando en Verde / Seeing in Green

When Luz Elena Castro, teacher of Gallery Route One’s Latino Photography class, introduced the idea of sustainability as the year’s theme she was met with enthusiasm. Betty Macias said, “We Latinos need to learn more about this topic.” “So we can teach our children,” said Juanita Romo. It proved to be a vast subject, and in West Marin the possibilities were overwhelming. The photographers followed what captured their imaginations, and what was possible in their busy lives. They learned new practices and skills, they took action, and they realized the value of what they already knew from growing up in Mexico. We gave the group the dual challenge of documenting science and making art, and they succeeded at both.

I hope that you like my pictures. I have not been studying photography for very long. Believe me, the photos I have been taking, I took with much dedication. I feel very privileged to be part of this class. I know there are many people waiting for this opportunity. I was born as a photographer during the same time my second child, Xitlaly, was born.
Before this class, I did not take photos, and I didn’t recycle out on the ranch. I used to kill birds with a slingshot. It was easy for me to kill them – for food or for fun, as we did in Mexico. Here I learned to value the life of animals, and I am sharing with my wife and children what I am learning. When the people taking care of the birds asked us what we can do to protect birds, I told them, “No more slingshots.” I still have one at the house, but I have stopped using it.
Photographing the fish was a beautiful experience. I never thought that the small fish could be sick, or endangered, and that there could be people interested in them. I learned that in a simple photo, one could show a small event that is happening in an immense world. While taking these photos, I felt connected to the small fish, and to the people that were doing this work, and to the people that would see my photos.
When I am taking photos I see the world, or the thing I am looking at, in a different way. I am more concentrated, more focused. I like to make photos because I want to be someone in the future.

Espero que les gusten mis fotos. Yo no llevo mucho estudiando fotografía. Créanme, las fotos que he tomado las he hecho con mucha dedicación. Me siento muy privilegiado de ser parte de ésta clase. Yo sé que hay mucha gente esperando tener ésta oportunidad. Yo nací como fotógrafo al mismo tiempo que mi segunda hija Xitlaly, nació.
Antes de ésta clase yo no tomaba fotos, ni reciclaba en el rancho. Yo acostumbraba a matar pájaros con una resortera. Era fácil para mi matarlos -para comerlos o simplemente por diversión, como lo hacíamos en Mexico. Aquí aprendí a valorar la vida de los animales, y estoy compartiendo con mi esposa y mis hijos todo lo que estoy aprendiendo.Cuando la gente que cuida los pájaros nos preguntó que podíamos hacer ara protegerlos, yo les dije, “No más resorteras”. Yo todavía tengo una en la casa, pero he parado de usarla.
Fotografíar los peces fue una experiencia bonita. Yo nunca pensé que los peces pequeños podían estar enfermos, o en peligro de extinción, y que pudiera haber gente interesada en ellos. Aprendí que en una simple foto, uno puede mostrar un pequeño evento que está pasando en un mundo inmenso.
Mientras tomaba éstas fotos me sentí conectado con los peces pequeños, con la gente que está haciendo éste trabajo y con la gente que verá mi foto.
Cuando estoy tomándo fotos yo veo el mundo, o lo que estoy mirando, de una manera diferente.
Yo estoy, hoy en día, más concentrado o más enfocado. Me gusta tomar fotos porque quiero ser alguien en el futuro.

I am very happy with this year’s project because we focused on nature and on recycling and the protection of nature. With these photographs, we are trying to awaken consciousness in people and in ourselves about how important it is to stop doing the things that are bringing us towards an immanent end. We have the responsibility in our hands to stop destroying the earth.
In this class, I focused on water, and the importance this element has for us. Without water, we cannot live. What I am learning is creating consciousness in our family. One day, my four year-old son, Carlitos, was taking a bath and he kept adding more water. I told him we have very little water. In his next bath, he said to me, “That’s it, Mom, because there is very little water.”
I found a lot of pleasure working with water. When I was cleaning my house, I would stop and just play with the water. I had looked online and got inspired from pictures I saw, and I decided, thinking in green, to try my own images. I spent on hour working to get the water (it kept falling apart) into the recycling symbol, to show the relationship between humans, recycling, and water.

Estoy muy contenta con el proyecto de este año, porque nos enfocamos en la naturaleza y en el reciclaje y en la protección del planeta. Con éstas fotografías, estamos tratando de despertar consciencia en la gente y en nosotros mismos acerca de lo importante que es parar las cosas que nos están llevando a un inminente final. Nosotros tenemos en nuestras manos la responsabilidad de parar la destrucción de la tierra.
En esta clase, yo me enfoqué en el agua, y la importancia que éste elemento tiene para nosotros. Sin agua no podemos vivir. Lo que yo estoy aprendiendo es a crear consciencia en nuestra familia. Un día, mi hijo de cuatro años, Carlitos, estaba tomando un baño y quería poner más agua. Yo le explique que había poquita agua. En su próximo baño, él me dijo a mi, “Eso es Mamá, porque hay muy poquita agua”.
Encuentro mucho placer al trabajar con el agua. Una vez estaba limpíando la casa, y paré sólo para jugar con el agua. Yo había mirado fotos en internet que me inspiraron, entonces decidí, pensando en verde, tratar de hacer mis propias imágenes. Estuve una hora trabajando hasta lograr con el agua hacer el símbolo del reciclaje (se deshacía continuamente), para mostrar la relación entre los humanos, el agua y el reciclaje.
