When I came to this country, I never thought I would have the kind of experiences I have had with Aztec dancing — to do the ceremonies where we give thanks to the earth. This gives me feelings of freedom and strength; I feel proud to be part of the community of Aztec dancers. I like that the Aztecs give thanks to the four elements — earth, fire, water, and air. We believe that what you do in this life will affect your next life, and so it is important to live in harmony with the earth and with all of life.
I like these photos because they show this ceremonial part of my life. It means, though, that when I am dancing, I cannot photograph, and when I photograph I can’t be dancing. I love doing both of them. I also love to photograph children, because [childhood] is one of the best times of life, a time when you don’t have to worry, but are free to play, to be happy.
Cuando vine a este país, nunca pensé que iba a tener el tipo de experiencias que he tenido con el baile de Azteca – para hacer las ceremonias donde damos gracias a la tierra. Esto me da la sensación de libertad y fuerza, me siento orgullosa de ser parte de la comunidad de danzantes aztecas. Me gusta que los aztecas le dieron gracias a los cuatro elementos – tierra, fuego, agua y aire. Creemos que lo que haces en esta vida va a afectar su vida futura, por lo que es importante vivir en armonía con la tierra y con toda la vida.
Me gustan estas fotos porque muestran la parte ceremonial de mi vida. Esto significa, sin embargo, que cuando estoy bailando, no puedo fotografiar, y cuando fotografío no puedo estar bailando.
