I love taking pictures of people at the special events of life. One of the mothers called and asked me if I would take pictures of her son’s first confirmation, which I did. Then she called to ask if I would take pictures of his communion, so I took those too. A relative of that family then called to ask me to photograph her daughter’s Quinciñera. I took a lot of pictures. I even borrowed my boss’ SLR camera and took many more. I have learned that you have to take many pictures to get some good ones. Since I work with children, I see that some children are very serious, or shy. I love to be creative in helping them feel secure and to come alive. I think part of why I enjoy this kind of photography so much is that it reminds me of all the celebrations growing up and for my kids, including my daughters’ quinciñeras back in Jalostotitlán. I learned things from watching the professionals in Mexico who photographed those.
I also love photographing landscapes, animals, flowers. I live out on a ranch in Point Reyes, and I see many beautiful sunsets when I am driving home from work. I often pull over on the side of the road to photograph them. The portraits I’ve been taking are a way of saying how much I love the traditions of my culture. I want the children of our community to receive the values of connection to family and to church, and for us to teach our children respect for adults and for each other. I feel proud when we keep these traditions from our home country alive.
I am happy to say I am starting to feel like a professional. And, I want to give thanks to all our teachers in the photography class.
Me encanta tomar fotos de la gente en los eventos especiales de la vida. Una de las madres me llamó y me preguntó si quería tomar fotos de la primera confirmación de su hijo, lo cual hice. Entonces ella me llamó para preguntarme si quería tomar fotos de su comunión y las tome tambien . Un pariente de la familia luego llamó para pedirme que fotografiar la Quinciñera de su hija. Tomé un montón de fotos. Incluso me prestó mi jefe una cámara SLR y tomé muchos más. He aprendido que hay que tomar muchas fotos para conseguir algunas buenas. Desde que trabajo con niños, veo que algunos niños son muy graves, o tímidos. Me encanta ser creativo para ayudar a que se sientan seguros y cobran vida. Creo que parte de por qué me gusta este tipo de fotografía tanto es que me recuerda a todas las celebraciones de mi adolecencia y para mis hijos, incluyendo quinciñeras mis hijas en Jalostotitlán. Aprendí cosas de mirar los profesionales en México que las fotografiaron .
También me encanta fotografiar paisajes, animales, flores. Yo vivo en un rancho en Point Reyes, y veo muchas puestas del sol hermosas cuando manejo a casa desde el trabajo. A menudo me detengo en el lado de la carretera para fotografiarlas.
