GRO Artist Steven Hurwitz presents Easy Pieces in the Annex. The show features small, brightly painted, abstract wood constructions that emphasize creative play.
The artist states “There are so many ways to find meaning beyond the getting and spending of daily life. Making art is mine. It’s fundamental to who I am. Beyond that, I’m reaching out to kindred spirits. This show is an attempt to make sense out of a lot of focused messing around. The pieces are puzzles; simple arrangements of reworked test pieces left over from other projects. My intention is for them to be matter-of-fact. Nothing other than what they are; modest contrasts between order and randomness.”
BIO
My adult life has been one of continuous reinvention, sometimes by choice, and others by necessity. With few exceptions, creativity has been a constant. At first, it seemed like a decision, but in retrospect, being an artist was fundamental to who I was even when I didn’t know I could call myself that or, later, whether I deserved to make that call. It was a realization. It’s what attracted me to home renovation, finding a place with “good bones”. Feeling it first, then seeing it. It’s why I went into the clothing business. Clothes have it all. Color, shape, hand, human form, the psychological, aspirational, and in business, risk. Both rely on our eyes and our intuition. You can say the same about trading in expensive automobiles. On the road to another of my self-reinventions. So much easier than making clothes. I’m an artist actively engaged in a studio practice committed to showing new work each chance I’m given. Art and the creative process has become fundamental to who I am as a person. Beyond that, I’m reaching out to kindred spirits.
This show came together on its own. It’s an attempt to make sense out of a lot of random messing around. They’re puzzles, simple arrangements of test pieces left over from other projects. I want them to be matter of fact. Nothing other than what they are. Each piece a part of the whole but with an identity all its own. Small constructions of miniatures. And real, some framed but not a picture. Some are more successful than others. You decide.
