SUMMARY:
Gallery Route One is a nonprofit art gallery with community service programs that was founded in West Marin in 1983. This year they celebrate their 40th anniversary with an exhibition of over seventy past and present Artist Members.

Gallery Route One is a nonprofit art gallery with community service programs that was founded in West Marin in 1983. This year they celebrate their 40th anniversary. To honor this important milestone, we would like a story to be written about our 40th Anniversary Celebration and Exhibition featuring artworks by as many past and present Artist Members (68 to date + 5 online) as we could get ahold of.

For forty years, Gallery Route One has not only created a space where artists can create and exhibit without constraints but has been dedicated to community outreach programs. Gallery Route One’s Artist Members run the Exhibition Program and an online bi-monthly program for artists called the Artists’ Exchange where the public can learn about various artists’ practices, approaches, and methods.

Additionally, GRO has a Fellowship Program for artists aged 21-40, offering an uncommon opportunity to develop their work and hold solo exhibitions. The Latino Photography Project, which just celebrated its 20th year, has been instrumental in ensuring many who go unnoticed have their “voices” heard, and a documentary covering this project is now available to view on PBS. GRO’s Visiting Artist Program that focuses on exhibitions about the environment, immigration, and social justice, and GRO’s Artists in the Schools Program brings professional, working artists into classrooms throughout Marin County.

Gallery Route One was started 40 years ago by 25 West Marin Artists and became a nonprofit organization in 1983. In honor of its 40th year, the organization is planning an expansive exhibition featuring many of the artists who have been members over the years, as well as past Artist Fellows. A large Celebration Event at the gallery will take place on December 9, 2023, and approximately 200-300 people are expected to attendance over the course of the day. The gallery will be holding an Open House all day, with special festivities kicking off at 3pm.

A regional landmark since 1983, Gallery Route One is an arts organization located in the town of Point Reyes Station, adjacent to the entry for Marin County’s Point Reyes National Seashore. Besides offering rotating exhibits by member artists, GRO also maintains its various programs as well as exhibitions addressing environmental, immigration and social justice issues.
