“IN/OUT”   An installation of Sacred Texts which are incised words and phrases on small sheets of paper enhanced with gold, black or red ink.  The installation is based on Diana Marto’s year long investigation into the dark and the light, which began in Berlin and culminated in her October performance in the cell house on Alcatraz.  The term “sacred texts” is inspired by the experience of engaging with the collection of original sacred texts spanning all of human civilization at the British Library.

“I believe in solids, I believe in liquids, but I’m not sure about vapor, that has to be simply accepted because it will vanish.”

Wave after wave of immigrants have made their way to this country to escape hardship or seek opportunity. Most arrive ready to work, filling American factories and fields. Typically we have come with few possessions, more a transport of memories,stories, farming practices, traditions, recipes. As the next generation assimilates and takes on the language and customs of the new country, the old ways fade quickly, and knowledge is lost. These photographs and stories celebrate some of the many cuisines that have come to West Marin. The recipes carry a history of place — of plants, climate, and an accumulated wisdom of what feeds us, culturally and nutritionally. Sitting down at the table of our grandmothers we may find a more wholesome diet, and restore meaning and connection to this nation of immigrants.

Olas de inmigrantes han llegado a este país escapando de dificultades o buscando nuevas oportunidades. La mayoría de los recién llegados vienen listos a trabajar, ocupando los campos y las fábricas. Sin demasiadas pertenencias, mucho de lo que traen son las memorias de los trabajos en el campo, las tradiciones, las historias, y las recetas. Mientras que la generación siguiente asimila y toma el lenguaje y las costumbres del nuevo país, las viejas formas se desvanecen rapidamente. Estas fotografías e historias celebran algunas de las muchas cocinas que han llegado a West Marin. Las recetas cargan la historia del lugar a través de la vida de las plantas, el clima, y la sabiduría acumulada de lo que nos alimenta cultural y nutricionalmente hablando. La mesa de nuestras abuelas puede servir como dieta saludable, y al mismo tiempo ofrece significado y connección para una nación de inmigrantes.
