ABOUT GALLERY ROUTE ONE

GRO (Gallery Route One) is a nonprofit, community based, artist-run organization which provides professional exhibition space for visual artists in a rural setting. The gallery serves its local and regional communities by presenting varied exhibitions of contemporary art, and offers educational programs and related events such as lectures, performances and workshops. The organization adheres to a policy of equal access to artists from multi ethnic backgrounds and is committed to assisting artists from diverse backgrounds in presenting their work to the public.

GRO was founded by 25 artists in 1983, and currently maintains a membership of 20–25 artists. Our Board of Directors is drawn from interested community members, including artists. The organization supports two exhibition programs: members exhibitions and Project Space exhibitions, which feature guest artists. The Annex, a small, interior space, is available to GRO artists for a fee. We exhibit art in all media, including installation, but we do not regularly show crafts. Other GRO events include panel discussions, slide talks and Artists In the School, an on-going art program in the local public school. Artist members support the organization and its projects by paying monthly dues and by doing volunteer work, including staffing the gallery. GRO is also funded by our Supporting Members and contributions from the community. The Project Space program and the Artists In the School program are additionally supported by The Marin Community Foundation.
